Deafen makes it a little bit easier for iPod and iPhone users in the European Union - and maybe elsewhere - to lose their hearing.
Deafen accomplishes this by preventing the device from being woken up (when the volume is increased sufficiently while the screen is off when using headphones) by the ‘High Volume’ heads-up display, as illustrated.
